Difference between Steroid and Peptide
Difference between Steroid and Peptide
Steroids and peptides both are different types of hormones. Their formation and function both are different. Steroids are artificial version of testosterone hormones that are mainly responsible for human growth. These hormones are naturally produced in human body in a limited amount. If they are induced in the body from some outer source, they can have good results (only when they are administered properly). These steroids are commonly classified into two groups. One is anabolic steroids and the other is corticosteroids. Anabolic steroids are synthetically formed version of steroids that are used to boost up body function and increase muscle mass. В On the other side, corticosteroids are used to recover illness like asthma etc. In some cancer cases, it proves helpful in regaining weight and energy. It has anti-inflammatory effect that helps in reducing pain. So we can say that it is very useful in some medical cases.
Peptides, on the other hand, are formed with the help of joining two or more than two amino acids. There is only the difference of numbers between peptides and proteins. Peptides hold less than fifty amino acids and proteins have more than fifty amino acids. Peptides’ role in physiological and biochemical function of human body is out of question. They are present in every cell of human body but they have different names as well as different functions. Antibiotics, enzymes, receptors and hormones are all its examples. Peptides are really very helpful in anti-aging skin care. No doubt, they are very expensive but they have power to restore healthy as well as shiny skin. That is the reason of their utility in skin care products.
Steroids and peptides are very useful in human body. They are completely different from each other. Their main differences are as following.
In short, studies and researches are being conducted to have more knowledge about peptides, their uses, abuses and effects on human body so that they can be better used and are helpful for mankind.
В
1. The basic difference between steroids and peptides is this that steroids are non-polar and peptides are polar hormones. It means that steroids can penetrate into cells and can reach to the innermost receptors while peptides remain to the outer surface of the cells and cannot go deep into it.В
2. The other difference is in their formation. Steroids are synthesized version of fats and cholesterol whereas peptides are basically proteins. The function of both these elements is completely different.
3. As steroids can go deep into the cells, so they have major effects on human body. On the other hand, peptides cannot go deep, so they remain outside and bind the cells. Their effect is somewhat cascading.
4. Steroids are lipid soluble while peptides are water soluble.
5. Testosterones are the steroids and insulin is the peptide.
6. Steroid have their direct effect on the cells as these hormones exert their force to the targeted cells through gene activation directly but peptide hormones do not have direct effect on the cells. They in fact affect the cells through second messenger pathway.
In short, studies and researches are being conducted to have more knowledge about peptides, their uses, abuses and effects on human body so that they can be better used and are helpfulВ
